There are only two competitive preference levels to choose from, an “In It To Win It” team, or “Just for Fun”. You can form or join a team yourself, or sign up to be added to a random one. GISHers sign up in teams of up to 15 participants to tackle a list of items which is handed out on the first official hunt day. In the last couple of years, the scavenger-hunt has been taking part in the summer, around the first week of August. This year it was the Assbutt, a donkey with monarch butterfly wings, who got its name as an homage to a fan-favorite scene from “Supernatural,” the show that catapulted Misha Collins to legendary fandom favorite. The GISH mascot changes each year but is always a made-up animal hybrid. In 2012, it’s second run, the hunt unveiled an official mascot. The GISH hunt is formerly known as GISHWHES (Greatest International Scavenger Hunt the World Has Ever Seen) and was founded by Misha Collins in 2011. My very subjective, somewhat vaguer but if you ask me, arguably better answer is: GISH is a movement of people from all walks of life who want to make their personal world and the world as a whole a little less grey, a little kinder, and definitely a bit weirder. Well, the short answer is, it’s an elaborate and insane week-long scavenger hunt where participants (termed GISHers) complete items that require various levels of effort and skill, document their endeavors and collect GISHpoints for it all. I promise it will bring a bit of extra magic to your life. If, like most everyone I know you’d answer this with “have you lost your mind, that sounds horrifying”, you should still absolutely join GISH. They posted an item that proved to be just perfect for my little army.Have you ever felt you’re having way too much time on your hand? Do you have a crafting space or living room you’d like to drown in complete chaos? Do you enjoy having food thrown at you, or awkwardly interacting with strangers while wearing a random costume in public? Yes? Then you should definitely join GISH. Little however did I know that they would be needed long before that with gifwhes the pre hunt fun hosted by dinomite and gishwhes over on tumblr. With completion of the Fograt my arm was complete and ready for the hunt in August. I decided when doing the body to add a cream pattern with black surrounding to give the fograt some texture and a bit of character as the plain brown was just a bit boring and the fog falcon has stripes but in the world of gishwhes anything is possible so I decided just to have a little fun with the design on the body and the front ended up looking like a sun. The body was also covered with merino wool with the wings and tail being made seperatly and attached prior to body covering. I find the merino is soft and easy to use and can be left slightly fluffy instead of a tight felting to give the animals a fluffy realistic look. The eyes were next to be done, I considered felting the eyes but I wanted something that looked better so I used 5mm glass eyes which I purchased from ebay. I used fishing weights which were added above the feet and this helped keep fograt balanced. To get the balance right as the head obviously would make it topple I added some fishing sinkers into the body while I was felting. Next I used raw wool to make the shape of my fograt. I started with the feet, as usual pipe cleaners were top of the list for what to use this would let me move them and adjust the stance for best balance. Half fog falcon half rat the 2012 and first mascot was my final chance to show them how it was done. My team mates asked if I would then show them how these were made and with only the Fograt to go. I used a blending tool for the first time on his body and the end result was nothing short but amazing. The wooster is half wolf half rooster and this was going to be more complicated. Next I decided to do something a bit more complicated and tackles the 2013 mascot the Wooster. Once my first was made I had in my mind to do the rest of the mascots and they all soon came to life, with elopus the 2014 mascot being next. little did I know that my team was actually going to change but I am however still glad I made them. DinomiteĪfter I posted on my teams page he became an instant hit and i offered to make some more for some of my team. The dinomite came together quickly with raw wool over a frame of pipe cleaners so his limbs would be poseable. The mascot for 2015 is the Dinomite and he was the inspiration to start needle felting. With gishwhes registration opening early this year, I decided to do some preperation and it came in the form of needlefelted mascots.
